About 2,800 animals and 435 different species currently make up the zoo's collection of animals.

The Baltimore Zoo is a wild and wonderful 161-acre park that educates and entertains more than 600,000 visitors each year. It offers experiences that cannot be found anywhere else, rare encounters with lions, tigers, elephants, and more than 2,000 other amazing creatures. Where else can you meet a chimpanzee face-to-face, watch a polar bear do the back stroke, or roar like a lion-and hear him roar back! The Zoo is an important vehicle for education and conservation efforts critical to the preservation of our wild earth. Situated in the basement of the U.S. Department of Commerce Building, it is the nation's oldest aquarium, established in 1873 and at its present location since 1932. There are 50 tanks containing over 200 species of salt and fresh water fish, including piranha, shark, eel, and Japanese carp; also some endangered species.

The Salisbury Zoo, located in Salisbury, Maryland, was officially born in 1954 when some animals were placed on permanent exhibition in the City Park. The zoo's present form resulted from improvements made in the 1970's. The zoo now provides naturalistic enclosures for almost 500 species native to North, Central and South America.
